Day 5: Tuesday May 25, 2010 - SALZBURG - MELK - DÜRNSTEIN

This morning we board our private luxury motorcoach for the trip to Melk. Melk has played an important role in the Danube region since Roman times, when a fortress was built on the promontory overlooking a tiny “arm” of the Danube. The rock-strewn bluff where the abbey now stands was the seat of the Babenbergs, who ruled Austria from 976 until the Hapsburgs took over. We’ll enjoy a private guided tour of this important spiritual and cultural location, and then have a quick lunch at the Melk Abbey Restaurant. This afternoon we continue with a cruise through the Wachau valley, an especially beautiful area along the Danube. Through romantic scenery full of history and legends, the Danube winds its way past picturesque villages and steep vineyards. One of the most famous landmarks is the castle Dürnstein, where legend has it that Richard the Lion Heart was imprisoned before being found by his faithful minstrel Blondel. Our cruise will arrive at Dürnstein late this afternoon. Check in to the elegant, 5-star Hotel Schloss Dürnstein. Late this afternoon we’ll be treated to an Austrian wine seminar with a special tasting, before proceeding to dinner on the hotel’s terrace overlooking the Danube Valley (weather permitting).
