Culture & Heritage:

Celts, Romans, Visigoths, Moors and Christians all left their mark on this Iberian nation. Situated on the Atlantic Ocean, Portugal is famous for its ancient cathedrals and castles, rugged mountains, gorgeous beaches, serene forests, and picturesque farmlands. Portugal is also home to open air markets selling fresh produce, folk festivals, and concerts of traditional fado music.

Culinary:

Influenced by Mediterranean cuisine, Portuguese fare is legendary for its seafood and hearty country cooking. Restaurants feature modern dishes as well as simple things, such as olives, cheeses, roast meats, fish sizzling on the grill, and freshly baked bread. Throughout our travels we have opportunities to sample delicious foods and taste local sweets such as the famous cinnamon-dusted ‘Pastéis de Nata,’ a custard tart with a flaky crust and creamy center.
.

Educational:

Portugal was the world’s first maritime power and birthplace to some of the world’s first explorers. Learn about Vasco de Gama, who discovered the sea route to India, and Bartholomew Diaz who was the first to sail around the southern tip of Africa; he called this the Cape of Good Hope. Taste Portuguese Port, the famous wine made by adding grape spirit or brandy before fermentation ends and then being aged in oak barrels or steel containers for two and six years before it is bottled.
.

Landscapes & Wildlife:

For a country that’s geographically speaking small, Portugal features an abundant variety of different landscapes ranging from dramatic coastlines to sandy beaches and balmy waters of the Algarve, to the majestic snow-capped mountains of Serra da Estrela. The vast rolling plains of the Alentejo region are a perfect setting for vineyards and vast olive groves. Native animals to Portugal, some of them endangered, include the Iberian wolf, the Iberian lynx, the white stork and the man o’ war.
.

Leisure:

Portugal offers an abundance of opportunities to style leisure time. From taking it easy on the amazing Algarve beaches to shopping on the Avenida da Liberdade. Or embarking on a street art tour of Lisbon to sitting by the Douro River in Porto, sipping on a glass of port. You won’t run out of options.
.

Outdoor & Adventure:

Our itinerary is packed with options for outdoor activities. From horse-back riding options on the beach, to kayaking and swimming to biking in the vineyards. For additional adventure, consider exploring some of the amazing caves along the Algarve coast or taking a sunset cruise in Lisbon. Pack your sunscreen, hat and sunglasses embrace the Portuguese summer.
