Activity Levels

Our Activity Levels help you understand how active each trip is, so you can pick one that fits your pace.
You’ll find each tour’s rating on the tour website and more details on this page — like how much walking, hiking, or travel is involved.

This tour is traveling at a leisurely pace. The itinerary requires a small amount of physical activity. Standing and walking for moderate periods of time during countryside excursions or city tours. Walking typically on flat to moderate terrain and stairways, sometimes without handrails; elevators may not always be available.

This tour is appropriate for travelers in good health with overall good mobility and who are comfortable participating in at least three hours of activity per day.

This tour requires light physical activity combined with shorter travel days. Tour members should expect intermittent walking, with slight inclines and stair climbs. Activities may include city or nature walking tours. Walking typically on flat to moderate terrain and stairways, sometimes without handrails; elevators may not always be available.

This tour is appropriate for travelers who are somewhat physically fit and comfortable with longer days of touring (both walking tours and coach time).

This tour requires standing and walking for some extended periods of time during city or nature tours, museum visits, and/or outdoor activities. Walking over sometimes difficult terrain (e.g., cobblestones, city hills, stairs without handrails, absence of elevators, climbing aboard buses or trains with high steps). The daily pace and timing can fluctuate significantly between longer and shorter travel days.

This tour is appropriate for travelers who are physically fit, lead active lives, and are comfortable participating in moderate activities.

This trip features a full and active itinerary, sometimes at a fast pace, and offers activities with higher intensity. Excursions may require standing and walking for extended periods of time over more difficult terrain (e.g., cobblestones, city hills, stairs without handrails, limited or no access to elevators, muddy/slippery walking/hiking trails). The itinerary may require a higher number of longer travel days with morning and/or evening activities and/or full-day excursions at a faster pace and traveling longer distances. Excursions may require standing and walking to city centers where coaches are prohibited.

This tour is appropriate for travelers who are physically fit, lead active lives, and are comfortable participating in long days of activities.

This trip features an active itinerary with some full-day excursions at a fast pace. It offers activities with high intensity. Excursions require standing and walking for extended periods of time over more difficult terrain (e.g., cobblestones, city hills, stairs without handrails, limited or no access to elevators, muddy/slippery walking/hiking trails).

This tour is appropriate for travelers who have a high fitness level, expect a vigorous pace, are comfortable participating in several hours of physical activity per day, and enjoy challenging themselves physically.

Please note: Travel to and from the tour is not factored into our activity level ratings. Please take into account your stamina when traveling long distances and/or with multiple flight changes. Also, you must be able to handle your luggage independently throughout the itinerary.

Activity Levels for Special Trips

Activity Level 3 – Moderate
This multi-country trip features some long touring days by motor coach and train. It is a full and active itinerary at a fast pace with long-distance travel. Excursions are at a higher activity rate and may require standing and walking for extended periods of time over more difficult terrain (e.g., cobblestones, city hills, stairs without handrails, limited or no access to elevators, muddy/slippery walking), and walking to city centers where coaches are prohibited, as well as climbing aboard buses or trains with high steps. This itinerary includes the use of local transportation and overnight ship travel (16-day tour only). Some early morning departures and later evening returns are scheduled.

Appropriate for: Travelers who are physically fit, lead active lives, are comfortable participating in long days of activities, and are able to handle their own luggage.

Activity Level 4 – Moderate / Active
This multi-country trip features some long touring days by motor coach and full-day excursions. It is a full and active itinerary at a fast pace with long-distance travel. Excursions are at a higher activity rate and may require standing and walking for extended periods of time over more difficult terrain (e.g. cobblestones, city hills, stairs without handrails, limited or no access to elevators, muddy/slippery walking/hiking trails), and walking to city centers where coaches are prohibited, as well as climbing aboard buses or trains with high steps.   This itinerary includes hiking and biking, use of local transportation, and overnight ship travel (23-day tour only). Some early morning departures and later evening returns are scheduled. This tour offers more active optional excursions (such as moderate hiking and aquatic activities.)

Appropriate for: Physically fit Travelers, lead active lives, and are comfortable participating in long days of activities, and can handle their own luggage.
