The Spring Tulip Festival in the Netherlands

The Spring Tulip Festival in the Netherlands

The best place to see the tulips is the Keukenhof Tulip Garden, which is right outside of Amsterdam.

The famous Tulip Festival in the Netherlands takes place each year. Arrangements and tulip booms are scattered all throughout the city, museums, shops, restaurants, and cultural cities around Amsterdam. However, the best place to see the tulips is the Keukenhof Tulip Garden, which is right outside of Amsterdam. You also have to make sure you’re arriving in Amsterdam at the perfect time to see the tulips bloom. Read on to learn everything you need to know about the Tulip Festival!

History of Tulips in Amsterdam

Tulips are not originally from the Netherlands; in fact, they came from Turkey. Back in the 16th century, tulips were imported to Holland. In 1952, Carolus Clusius wrote a book about tulips, and the popularity of this flower exploded from there. Tulips became a hot commodity, and people would steal to get their hands on some bulbs. People began using tulips as money, which led to an economic downfall when tulips became so expensive that the market crashed. Tulips are still popular and important for the culture in Holland today.

When Should You Visit the Keukenhof Gardens?

A visit to the Keukenhof Gardens, which is where the most tulips are, is dictated by the weather and its unpredictability. Indeed, two main problems could potentially affect your plans. The first is that the garden is the only option for a shortened period of time each Spring. The second is that even in a short period, it isn’t 100% guaranteed that you will see the garden in its full bloom. Another issue that affected the most people was that the garden would sometimes bloom at only around 30% when tourists visited, despite a huge crowd. Keeping all this in mind, the best times to go to the tulip festival is anywhere from March 21st to May 12th. Many travelers recommend the 3rd week of April as the best time to go and see the tulips, but anytime in the middle of Spring will be your best bet.

Even though AESU’s trips including Amsterdam are not there in the spring, there are plenty of other exciting things to do, like bicycling in the windmill-dotted countryside!
