Discover the Karnak Temple in Luxor, Egypt!

Despite ongoing political and social unrest, Egyptians are as welcoming as ever to visitors of their country. In fact, it’s even considered a badge of honor for locals to take a selfie with a tourist! From towering Pharaonic temples to sparkling, sun-drenched beaches, Egypt brings out the adventurer in us all.  Discover Luxor, Cairo, and Aswan on a guided tour with AESU in 2020!

Luxor

Luxor is often referred to as the world’s most extraordinary open-air museum. Soak up the city’s rich past, and spend the day exploring the ruins, mummies, artifacts, temples, and tombs! Start your morning at the Temple of Hatshepsut, built to honor the sun god, Amon-Re and the female pharaoh, Hatshepsut. Situated at the base of limestone cliffs, the temple features three tiers of porticos complete with massive statues, pillars, and breathtaking hieroglyphs. Move on to the Valley of the Kings, where dozens of pharaohs were laid to rest. Pay your respects to over 63 royal tombs, including Tutankhamun, Ay, and Ramses VI! Complete your afternoon at the Karnak Temple Complex, Luxor’s largest collection of temple ruins, or stop by the Colossi of Memnon to compare yourself to 59-foot tall statues of kings!

Cairo

The hustle and bustle of Cairo is an experience in itself, but there are plenty of thrilling attractions in Egypt’s sprawling capital. Witness the Pyramids of Giza, one of the original Seven Wonders of the World. The pyramids have remained intact for roughly 4,500 years, and visitors are welcome to explore the historical magic! Just a short walk from the pyramids lies a part pharaoh, part lion known as the Great Sphinx! Best observed with a guided tour, the Great Sphinx sits next to two temples, one from the Old Kingdown and another from the New Kingdom. Spend the rest of your afternoon navigating the labyrinth of Islamic Cairo! Sample the delicious foods from street carts and savor the heralded coffee or shai (tea).

Aswan

It’s easy to fall in love with a city as warm and inviting as Aswan, especially after an exciting adventure in Cairo! Cross the Nile by boat, and pursue the fragrant, vibrant spice markets. The perfumes in Aswan are said to be the best in the country, and you’ll find them here in abundance! Escape to Elephantine Island, the largest island in the Nile just opposite of Aswan. Wander the quiet streets of a traditional Nubian village and don’t miss a photo opportunity in front of one of the many brightly colored walls. Relax at the Old Cataract Hotel, a historic British colonial-era 5-star resort hotel located on the banks of the Nile. Enjoy the panoramic views from the terrace, and sip on a refreshing glass of karkade (hibiscus iced tea).
