Top Messaging Apps to Use While Traveling

AESU knows how important it is for you to stay in touch with everyone while you’re traveling. That’s why we’ve compiled this short list of free communication apps to help you keep the people you’re missing back home in the loop. The best part of all of these messaging apps is that they work with wifi. So there’s no need to rack up international roaming fees on your trip!

Top Free Messaging Apps

Whatsapp– This is our favorite messaging app. As long as you have wifi, you can message anyone at any time. This tried and true app has been around for years and it’s likely that your friends, new and old, already have Whatsapp on their phones. Also, it doesn’t matter what type of phone you have. Whatsapp is compatible with most mobile operating systems. In addition to messaging, Whatsapp will also allow you to make phone calls over wifi.

Voxer– Remember when sprint phones had a walkie talkie option? Voxer lets you reminisce to those days but it’s even better because this walkie talkie works internationally. Just pretend that you have a walkie talkie with a crazy strong cross continental signal and keep in touch with your friends and family back home.

iMessage– iMessage is another well-known app that you probably already have on your phone.  As long as you have a wifi signal, you can message everyone back home just like you normally would. Send pictures, videos and talk in group chats. The only catch is that you and everyone you talk to has to have an iPhone…

Google Voice– Google Voice is great if you have business going on back in the States that you need to keep tabs on. Google Voice gives you a new number to pass out to your contacts. That number is connected to your google account and it records your calls and messages. When you find wifi access, it automatically forwards the messages to your phone and you can respond!

WeTransfer– This free app allows you to send messages directly to someone’s inbox. Just create a Dropbox account (if you don’t already have one), upload your pictures, and WeTransfer will send the pictures you want to the email of your choice. It’s great for sharing pictures privately!
