The Best Way to Spend 48 Hours in Split, Croatia

Here are some things you should do during your 48 hours in Split, Croatia.

The beautiful country of Croatia is a place that European tourists definitely shouldn’t forget to add to their travel list. In particular, the city of Split, which is the second-largest city in Croatia, is a place to take in the best of Croatian coastal life, ancient history, and more. Here are some things you should do during your 48 hours in Split, Croatia.

Explore Diocletian’s Palace

Constructed in the year 305 for the Roman Emperor Diocletian, this centerpiece of Split consists of an extensive network of buildings declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Take a walk through the central Peristyle or the Cardo, which is the main street through the Palace. You can see how this place has shaped the entire town of Split across the centuries in the limestone and marble columns and classic Roman architecture. While there, you should head to St. Domnius Cathedral within the palace grounds. Not only is it the world’s oldest cathedral, estimated to have been built as early as 600 AD, but you can climb the bell tower for one of the best views of Split.

Sample the Fare of Old Town

Old Town Split is another great place to experience the heart of Split. It consists of a series of streets around Diocletian’s Palace. Starting from the People’s Square, Narodni Trg, you will see Split’s old clock tower as you walk the cobblestone paths. Throughout Old Town, you can find many restaurants offering the freshest seafood in this coastal city. Or you can stop at the Zinfandel wine bar and sample some of Croatia’s finest wines. The Riva Promenade nearby is a popular place to take a walk along the harbor.

Hike the Ruins of Klis Fortress

If you are looking for more outdoor adventure, then you should take a quick detour to Klis Fortress. This rocky stronghold just outside of Split was the historic site of many battles from the Ottoman Empire to the Medieval Knights of Templar. If you are a fan, you will probably recognize Klis Fortress as the filming site for Meereen in Game of Thrones.
