Discover Alfama, the Oldest District in Lisbon

Alfama

Alfama is the oldest district in Lisbon but it’s known for being colorful, bright, and exciting!

Every year, over 4.5 million tourists flock to Lisbon to soak in its stunning views, ornate architecture, and traditional Fado music. Portugal’s capital is considered one of the most charming destinations in the world, and no trip is complete without a visit to the Alfama district. Learn more about Alfama, and discover Lisbon for yourself with AESU!

Get Lost

Alfama is filled with colorful Moorish tiled buildings and narrow, cobblestone alleyways. The entire district is a vibrant maze of ancient houses and architectural surprises. The best way to experience Alfama is to wander through its many side streets and down the steps overgrown with lush greenery. Remember to wear comfortable walking shoes!

Experience the Views

Lisbon is filled with sweeping views of the city and sparkling waters, and some of the best vantage points are located in Alfama. During the late afternoon, head towards the Miradouro das Portas do Sol! Enjoy a snack or cold beer from one of the convenient kiosks, and capture the incredible sights as the sun sets over the Tagus River.

Explore the Castelo de Sao Jorge

The Castelo de Sao Jorge dates back to the first century BC and has played an essential part in the history of Lisbon. The castle is open seven days a week and visitors can easily spend an entire morning or afternoon here admiring its many attractions. Visit the camera obscura, explore the ancient castle walls, and stroll across the gardens and the belvederes.

Visit the Lisbon Cathedral

The Lisbon Cathedral is the oldest church in the city, constructed in the year 1147. If you’re exploring Portugal in the summer, the Lisbon Cathedral offers a refreshing refuge from the heat! Entry is free, and visitors can explore the vast interior of the cathedral and the breathtaking stained glass windows.

Ride the 28 Tram

If you’re tired of walking, catch a ride on the number 28 tram! The yellow tram has become one of the most iconic forms of public transportation in Lisbon and winds through a large portion of Alfama. Buy your ticket in advance to ensure a seat!
