3 Days in Cairo, Egypt

When you travel with AESU to Cairo, Egypt, you can enjoy three packed days of exploring this city and the expansive Nile River.

A trip to Egypt can be an incredibly enriching experience. Cairo, the capital city of Egypt, lines the beautiful banks of the Nile and features an eye-catching fusion of modern and ancient life. Cairo also contains the last of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, the Pyramids of Giza. When you travel with AESU to Cairo, Egypt, you can enjoy three packed days of exploring this city and the expansive Nile River. What are some of the sights you must make time for? Read on to find out how to get the most out of your three days in Cairo.

Day 1: Explore Modern Cairo

Upon arrival in Cairo, take the opportunity to travel to the Left Bank and enjoy a traditional Cairene breakfast that contains tasty feta cheese, tomatoes, falafel, and Ful medames, a fava bean dish. If you want to get a fabulous bird’s-eye view of the city, walk up Cairo Tower. If you want to check out modern Cairo art, visit the Gezira Center for Modern Art, which displays various artworks by local artists.

Before you leave Cairo, you will want to pay a visit to the hundred-year-old cafe El Fishawi for Egyptian-style coffee and local ambiance. Order some refreshing Karkadé, Egypt’s national drink, to energize yourself for a stroll down historical Al-Muizz Street.

Day 2: Egyptian Antiquities and Valley of the Kings

To dig into ancient Cairo history, you can visit the Step Pyramid, or Pyramid of Djoser, the first pyramid ever built! Once you’ve stopped there, you can drive to Giza Plateau and visit Giza’s Pyramids alongside the Sphinx. You will also want to pay a visit to the world’s most extensive collection of Pharaonic antiquities at the Museum of Egyptian Antiquities, where you can find Tutankhamun’s tomb.

When traveling with AESU to Cairo, a cruise up the Nile is arranged. On this cruise, we stop in the city of Luxor and the Valley of the Kings. You can visit colorful tombs carved out of rocky cliffs and the beautiful Queen Hatshepsut’s Temple. Then, stop by Memnon Colossi and Karnak Temple, a large open-air museum. Finally, pay a visit to the Luxor temple. This temple was buried in the sand for centuries, which has kept it incredibly well-preserved.

Day 3: Spiritual Sightseeing

Cairo, Egypt contains numerous spiritual sights with a variety of religious histories. You can gaze at the Roman ruins and visit the Hanging Church, both left from the Roman Empire’s time in Cairo. Then, visit Saints Sergius and Bacchus Church, which contains a 10-foot-deep crypt believed to be a resting place for Mary, Joseph, and infant Jesus.

You can then see the massive Mosque-Madrassa of Sultan Hassan from the 14th century. This structure remains incomplete to this day, but the mosque is one of the largest in the world and is visually captivating. End your day with a visit to Al-Azhar Park, Cairo’s greenest urban attraction. These 74 acres were transformed into a park in 2005, which is now listed as one of the world’s 60 great public spaces by Project for Public Spaces.
